Summary: Harmonize ‘plural/pluralize’ label attribute with Zotero

Initial Comment:
First reported by Rintze Zelle:

This issue is over this thread on xbiblio-devel:
https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=47B43C8A.60308%40gmail.com

The following Zotero changeset:
https://www.zotero.org/trac/changeset/2352
added the enumerated “pluralize” attribute to labels (always/never/contextual).

This is consistent with the original CSL implementation:
http://xbiblio.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xbiblio/csl/schema/trunk/csl.rnc?r1=399&r2=404

and has an intuitive meaning for me. For the two separate page ranges
2 and 17-30, the three choices would be:

always:
pp. 2
pp. 17-30

never:
p. 2
p. 17-30

contextual (default):
p. 2
pp. 17-30

However, in CSL, the verb was changed to an adjective
(‘plural’–change for consistency, I think) and the type was changed
to a ‘boolean’ (inconsistent with the values of
‘delimiter-precedes-last’):
http://xbiblio.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xbiblio/csl/schema/trunk/csl.rnc?r1=404&r2=408

Presumably, you’d get the ‘always’ behavior by denoting this as
‘true,’ the ‘never’ behavior by denoting it as ‘false,’ and the
‘contextual’ behavior by omitting the attribute entirely. This is not
as intuitive to me & I would not expect a boolean to take on a third
behavior by being absent.

Message:
Are there any objections to adapting the schema to follow things as they
are now in Zotero, e.g. instead of a boolean value of plural, use pluralize
with the three options “always”, “never”, and “contextual”?

(the recent anonymous comment was mine)

I fully support Richard on this one. I wouldn’t mind staying with “plural”,
but I do think it is necessary to be able to specify the default value
(=“contextual”), and to use “always” and “never” instead of “true” and
"false".
