I actually really think the way they do this is the best way to do
citation insertion, since it avoids context switching when writing
(much quicker, and more writer-friendly).
I do, however, see some potential hiccups, like:

how to deal with prefix and suffix text?

point locators?
-
what happens when you have a footnoted style?
The third one may be the most difficult, particularly when combined
with the first two.
