Institutional acronyms

I have a user who is facing this issue:

The obvious CSL syntax would be , but we don’t
have a way to deliver the value of the abbreviation. There are
several possible approaches:

  • Add a companion “abbreviation” subvariable within the name;
  • Use a registry of institutional abbreviations, similar to the
    contemplated lists of journal abbreviations;
  • Treat this as an extension of multilingual support, as a kind of
    “transliteration”.

The first option seems the most straightforward. The second would be
simpler from a user perspective, and would avoid further clutter in
the names area of the Zotero UI, which is already pretty crowded –
but we’d have to get a names registry going, which would be a pretty
big organizational burden for someone.

Any thoughts on this?

Well, first impression (but I’ve thought about this before):

To me this is the same use case as journal abbreviations, which is the
same use case as series or collection abbreviations.

If that’s right, then it suggests the same solution.

Sounds good. It would be nice to have a default list that the
community can easily contribute to. Could a simple list maintenance
interface be offered on the Zotero website, I wonder?

Or maybe another consumer of CSL could pitch in on this? It would be
very helpful to the cause.
