Hello,

Does the subsequent-author-substitute apply to all authors, or only
the first author? Do all authors have to match or only the first one?

This situation:

John Doe, Jane Smith (2005)
John Doe, Jane Smith (2006)
John Doe, William Gates (2007)

will that be:

John Doe, Jane Smith (2005)
---------., Jane Smith (2006)
---------., William Gates (2007)

or

John Doe, Jane Smith (2005)
---------. (2006)
John Doe, William Gates (2007)

And how about this situation:

John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates (2005)
John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates, Bill O’Reilly (2006)
John Doe, Jane Smith, Bill O’Reilly (2007)

will that be:

John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates (2005)
---------., Jane Smith, William Gates, Bill O’Reilly (2006)
---------., Jane Smith, Bill O’Reilly (2007)

or

John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates (2005)
---------., Bill O’Reilly (2006)
John Doe, Jane Smith, Bill O’Reilly (2007)

or

John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates (2005)
---------., William Gates, Bill O’Reilly (2006)
---------., Bill O’Reilly (2007)

or

John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates (2005)
John Doe, Jane Smith, William Gates, Bill O’Reilly (2006)
John Doe, Jane Smith, Bill O’Reilly (2007)

This.

An “author” for these purposes represents the _group_ of authors. Where
the group changes in ANY way (including order), it’s a different
"author."

Same logic applies to generate the year suffix of course. So:

John Doe, Jane Smith (2005a)
---------. (2005b)
John Doe, William Gates (2005)
