By popular demand[1], I’ve updated the Zotero styles page to use CSL 1.0
styles from GitHub, and I’ve taken the opportunity to add some new
search features, with the ability to filter by name, dependent status,
citation format, and field.

Temporary URL for testing:

A few notes:

1. Style previews are forthcoming—just waiting on some improvements to
citeproc-node. Do we have any sample data that covers more than the data
used on the old styles page?

2. For now it’s pulling from the GitHub repo every 30 minutes. Given how
efficient a git pull appears to be I’m sure it’d be fine to do it more
frequently, but I can also set up an update URL that can be called from
a GitHub post-commit hook to make updates instantaneous.

3. We’ll be replacing the old styles page with this one within a few
days. At that point, after Rintze does a final merge, we’ll remove the
’csl’ directory from Zotero SVN and archive the old styles page at
/styles-old so that users of older clients can still find CSL 0.8 styles
if need be.

Let me know if you run into any problems with the new page or have ideas
for improvements.

Nice! This ought to make it much easier to find styles.

Suggestion: any chance you can put this code in it’s own repo on
github, such that ti’s easy for I and others to make suggested changes
(say to the CSS)?

Yes, let me get back to you on this. Essentially we need to back this
issue up with some JSON sample data.

OK, thanks.

While we’re on this, do you have any thoughts on two bigger,
longer-term, issues?

1. versioning - [settle on conventions for versioning · Issue #7 · citation-style-language/styles · GitHub](https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/issues/7)

2. ids - [settle on new base uri for styles, update ids accordingly · Issue #2 · citation-style-language/styles · GitHub](https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/issues/2)

So far I haven’t really done anything on either.

Oh, one other thing:

I’ve always thought the “show dependent styles” checkbox a little odd
for a general, non-technical, user.

If we need to keep it, might it be valuable to add a little
description somehow that makes clear its purpose?

not me, I get now and 1 hour ago the correct page.

Now that I see the page: awesome! Thanks a million.

+1. I like the new search functionality, but it would be nice if the search
box would take up less vertical space.

Maybe a “Only show unique styles (this hides dependent CSL styles)” checkbox
that is unchecked by default?

Nice! Works like a charm here.

One very small niggle: the fixed page width is slightly larger than
the display on my tiny netbook (1024x600). It doesn’t affect usability
at all, but the “Loading” message is only partially visible without
scrolling laterally.

Thanks a lot for this!

For example, while not as flexible as the current clickable labels, two
dropdown menus (“Field” and “Citation Format”) would take up much less
space.

You’d be out of luck. The ability to show more search results might be worth
it, though, especially on small screens.

I’m not sure why it would’ve been cutting off at 1024px unless you had
page zoom bumped up, but the search pane will now shrink with the page
width.

It probably was zoomed a bit. Age apparently affects both eyesight and
memory. 🙂 Looks great now.

I recognize that not everyone views these things on a 30" monitor, and
the search pane could perhaps be a little more compact, but vertical
space is cheap. What’s wrong with scrolling?

It’s certainly not worth making the page more awkward to use and less
flexible. And due to the way the tags work, you gain vertical space as
soon as you select one.

A screenshot from Bruce suggests that the search box isn’t necessarily

In Firefox 4, Linux Ubuntu 10.04, it seems to match the screenshot here.
In Google Chrome the appearance is also the same, but without the
placeholder text.

Firefox 4.0.1, Kubuntu 11.04:

Citation Formats: and the left-most button (author-date) partly cover the text

Would it be too costly to make the style list a table so that Install and Last
