Rintze has been cleaning up the github repo a bit. Question:
Is there really any need for a separate “dependent” directory?

Is there a downside to having one? It saves people the bother of having to
distinguish between the two types.

It depends on how we make use of the repo going forward. But it seems
to me checking whether a style is dependent is trivial.
